Dear Toots

When Uncle Sam calls on Grant Carpenter, he goes, despite the fact that he has just met his dream girl, gotten his dream job, and bought his dream car. “Carp” finds himself activated into the Army Corps of Engineers in May of 1941, prior to the United States’ entanglement in World War II.

You’re invited to follow this Army Officer’s experiences over the next four years through the surprisingly funny, poignant, sometimes profound letters he writes home to his single mother. Interspersed with the actual letters are his explanations given in an interview, as well as historical photographs and newspaper articles.

Reviews:

  • As a student of military history as well as being a retired Army Officer, I have read countless books about the WWII timeframe and have now added Dear Toots to the list of my most favorite! As I have been many times in the past, I found myself deeply moved by our nation’s Greatest Generation. – Diana Stumpf
  • The book is many stories in one: a newlywed’s love story, a travelogue, and a memoir; a view into the heart and mind of a young man maturing in an uncertain world. The story keeps you invested, page after page; a satisfying read for lovers of non-fiction, fiction, and romance. – G.G. Ulmer
  • So captivating! I found that I couldn’t put it down! I wanted to read the next letter and the next! – Terri M.
